Sometimes, it feels like there is a pill for everything and in a lot of ways this feeling is not far off from the truth. The unfortunate reality of the situation is that our country has way too many pills for way too many afflictions. What is really upsetting is that a lot of times these substances don’t even really work like they’re supposed two. With Acetaminophen (also called acetaminophen cod 3 or hydrocodone-acetaminophen), for example, this is a new opiate prescription painkiller pill drug that was supposed to help people who suffer from varying degrees of pain or physical discomfort.
All too often though that is not exactly what happens when people take this drug. While it may to a degree help address pain, people will find themselves building up a tolerance to the drug and needing to take more and more and more to experience the same pain-reducing effects of the drug. When this happens, the person is building up the dependence on the substance and will have a very hard time trying to stop taking it. The same logic works if somebody is abusing the drugs recreational and is not taking it for a pain problem. In this scenario as well, the person will simply have to keep taking more more more of it and will find themselves addicted pretty soon.
Even with a drug like Acetaminophen, which is supposed to help people and which is supposed to be made with the foresight of not getting people addicted to it, people are still getting addicted to it. The pharmaceutical industry has supposedly made attempts to stop people from getting addicted to their drugs, but this still happens all the time. For example, a pretty high percentage of those who take Acetaminophen for legitimate reasons will end up becoming addicted to it whether they are interested and continue to take drugs or not. Furthermore, people who abuse pills recreational to get high off of it will also experience addiction to it if they take it a couple times. Sometimes people experience an addiction to it even if they just take it once. The statistics on this are pretty unpleasant.
As the years go by, it has become very apparent that our biggest worry is that our biggest concerns with drug and alcohol addiction are entirely related to legal substances, not illegal substances. The severity and the concern here is that substance abuse consistently becomes more problematic when considered in the form of legal substances as opposed to illegal substances. Just the numbers on this is concerning.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, there are 8 million people who are addicted to drugs in this country and six million of them are addicted to pharmaceutical drugs that are legal. Another 10 million are addicted to alcohol which is legal and another 5 million are addicted to a combination of alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs. What we can see here is about 85% to 95% on any given year of addiction problems in this country is entirely related to substances that are perfectly legal for consumption!
What is shown here is the absolute ludicrous factor that while the United States suffers from one of the biggest addiction problems in the world, the vast majority of our addiction problems come from substances that are even legal to use. Obviously, this is a hugely concerning issue, to say the least. Studies further show that, even though the United States only makes up about 5% of the entire world population, we consume about 75% of the planets annual supply of pharmaceutical drugs. The United States is obviously a seriously over-medicated society, and when you add alcohol abuse into that factor as well, you get a very concerning and difficult scenario, to say the least. Now more than ever these factors need to be addressed with more sincerity and more intensity if we are ever going to make any progress with them.
