Substance abuse knows no boundaries. In today’s world, any person from any family can experience the threat of addiction, on a daily basis. Though substance abusers face shame and stigma from society, as a whole, it is these individuals that are in the most need of a helping hand. With the growing drug epidemic that is ravaging our nation, now is the time to seek help for substance abuse issues. Michigan has not been immune to this devastating trend. Even its small cities and towns, such as Baldwin, have been impacted by several drugs of abuse.

The City of Baldwin, Michigan

Though its small population sits at only about 1,200 individuals, Baldwin has been named the seat of Lake County. Like many other towns and cities in Michigan, Baldwin is a popular destination among tourist, from both near and far. During the warmer months, Baldwin’s visitors enjoy the regions many lakes, forests, rivers and fisheries. The Baldwin River (which is a tributary of the Pere Marquette River) is one of the most popular attractions within the town’s limits. This makes Baldwin an excellent area for anyone who enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, or other outdoor activities.

Despite its natural wonders, many areas in Lake County are not as economically or financially stable as other regions. The median household income in Baldwin hovers around $16,500.00, whereas the median income for the average Michigan resident is upwards of $48,000.00. Furthermore, Baldwin has an unemployment rate that is almost 2% higher than the rest of Michigan. The recent closing of a prison in Baldwin left many residents without jobs. Despite this negative figure, both median income and unemployment rates in the area are improving.

Today, most Baldwin residents find work in the retail or public administration business. In history, however, Baldwin was put on the map by the lumber industry. In the 1870’s, the area, which was originally called Hanibal, was first established. In 1872, the name was officially changed to Baldwin, to honor Henry P. Baldwin, who was the governor of Michigan at that time. In 1873, the railway was extended to accommodate Baldwin, and a year later, the town became the seat of Lake County. Finally, in 1887, Baldwin was incorporated as an officially recognized village. This village grew into a town that is currently home to its own airport and a well-known public library.

Unfortunately, like many other regions across Lake County and Michigan, Baldwin has experienced the substance abuse epidemic that is sweeping the nation.

Drug Rehabilitation & Treatment in Baldwin

The rural poverty that is prevalent throughout Lake County, including Baldwin, has been one factor that has led to the increase in substance abuse. Researchers say that the stress associated with insecure finances is a factor that is strongly linked to substance abuse, along with other issues such as suicide, teen pregnancy, and depression.

As proof of this correlation, in Lake County in 2014, there were 33 fatal Heroin overdoses. Though this represents a decline from 2015, when there were 50 Heroin-related deaths, the number is still staggeringly high. Officials say that the influx of drugs to this region comes primarily from gangs and drug traffickers from Indiana. Other sources include large cities within Michigan, such as Detroit.

Specifically in Baldwin, Heroin was the number one drug-related cause of hospital or emergency room admissions in the last year.  Notably, admissions for Heroin were more than double that of any other drugs. Other drugs of abuse in the Baldwin area include:

  • Xanax
  • Percocet
  • Cocaine
  • OxyContin
  • Vicodin
  • Lortab
  • Methamphetamines

Notably, the majority of the top five substances of abuse in Baldwin are Opiate-based drugs. Baldwin, however, shares this trend with cities and states across America. As the number of prescriptions for Opiate painkillers rises, so does addiction. When addicts can no longer afford or obtain these pills, many turn to Heroin. This potent substance has had deadly consequences for addicts across the United States.

In an effort to combat this growing epidemic, Lake County and Baldwin officials are taking measures to fight back. Even U.S. attorneys are teaming up with local law enforcement to target the source of the drugs and to educate residents about the dangers of substance abuse.

Two of the most influential factors in the recent battle against drug and alcohol abuse are the increased outreach to school children and the introduction of Naloxone. Naloxone, otherwise known as Narcan, is the lifesaving antidote to an Opiate overdose. While the medication is only currently available to medical professionals, officials have introduced two identical bills, which would allow the drug to be available without a prescription. Though the proposed laws have stirred some controversy, many Michigan residents see it as a step in the right direction in the fight against substance abuse.
