The History of Blue Cross Blue Shield
Blue Cross Blue Shield started in 1929 and has been providing help and care into and through the nation since then, offering excellent and genuinely supportive care options to all of their customers and clients. This insurance company has shaped the healthcare industry since the 1930s.
Blue Cross started in 1929 with a unique partnership between the Baylor University Hospital and its financially struggling patients. The hospital was trying to find a way to make their health care more affordable for their patients, who, though many of them had good jobs as Dallas public school teachers, still couldn’t afford medical care at that time. Baylor University administrators struck a deal with these patients to prepay just fifty cents a month for up to 21 days of hospitalization annually. The project worked, and Blue Cross was born.
Blue Shield had a similar start, beginning with American workers in the early 1900s. Pacific Northwest loggers and miners of the early 1900s, faced as they were with the constant threat of illness and injuries as simple, occupational hazards, required substantial medical care to stay healthy and productive on the job site. To accomplish this, employers organized a monthly fee that their employees would pay out of their paychecks in exchange for unlimited and paid for medical services.
The most interesting part perhaps of the history of Blue Cross Blue Shield is when the two companies merged. How it occurred was that mostly through the 1930s and 1940s, Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s respective and innovative approaches to changing the healthcare options in the country began to parallel similar lines of action for one another, and representatives from both companies started to notice this.
Between the two of them, together Blue Cross and Blue Shield grew as individual organizations to encompass now a lot of people and a lot of medical practices. For the famous merger that was one of the greatest of its time, the two companies began to unify as one in the 1940s. It was at this time that they started setting up agreements in place within their organizations to ensure for all involved that the total no less than 24 million members of both plans combined would have even better comprehensive coverage as a result of the merger.
