Many addiction treatment facilities offer art therapy groups as an alternative treatment method to help clients work through the underlying issues behind their addiction. You might be surprised at how art therapy group can relax the clients to a point where they open up and discuss their addiction issues while in a relaxed atmosphere with others who are struggling with the same issues.
Most Art Therapy Groups in rehab meet two times a week. Every day they focus on a particular topic. They paint, do collages, do some writing. Also, they explore why they are in rehab, what their goals are for the future, and talk about these things without even realizing it as they do their artwork. Many of them find it to be relaxing. All in all, it’s a way of getting the clients to identify emotions, talk about feelings, express themselves in a different way than just sitting and talking.
Art Therapy Groups
There is much to be learned about clients through their artwork. If a client is slow to open up about their experiences and addiction issues, counselors can analyze their artwork and begin the discussion at that point. They can tell the client what they think it appears to be and they will, in turn, generally describe exactly the meaning of the piece. This helps the counselor and client to form a bond and it helps earn the patient’s trust and confidence that the counselors can help them.
