I’m Sue Miller. I’m an Occupational Therapist. I come in, and I do Art Therapy Group two times a week here at BDR. Every day we focus on a particular topic. We paint, do collages, do some writing. So, depending; today’s class focused on their favorite age and why. We do a lot of delving into why they are here, what their goals are for the future, and they are talking about these things without even realizing it as they do their artwork. So, a lot of them find it to be relaxing. I get a lot of repeat people from session to session. And it’s just a general way of getting the clients to identify emotions, talk about feelings, express themselves in a different way than just sitting and talking.

There is much that we can learn about our clients through their artwork. If a client is slow to open up about their experiences and addiction issues, we can analyze their artwork and begin the discussion at that point. We can tell the client what we think it appears to be and they will, in turn, generally describe exactly the meaning of the piece. This helps us to form a bond, so to speak, with the client and help earn their trust and confidence that we can help them. I think it’s just another benefit that BDR offers.
