Leaving Rehab Early: How to Ensure Your Loved One Finishes Treatment

Addiction can be a very difficult condition to deal with, and the reality is that recovery from it can be difficult and arduous as well.  It can take some time for a person to be able to truly overcome and get past their addiction to a point where their sobriety is not as precarious as it was in the early stages of recovery.  Because of the hardship and difficulty that can arise during addiction treatment, there are often individuals who attempt to leave early before their program is completed.  This can also happen at times when a person feels like they are “done” before they complete the full program.

How Leaving Early Can Be Dangerous

The reality is that it can be quite detrimental to a person’s long-term recovery if they leave early.  Not only does it potentially leave them in a precarious position with their sobriety, but it also causes them to miss out on a large part of treatment that could address key factors behind their addictions. They could miss out on key coping tools for them to stay sober.

Families can often feel torn because their loved one may call them saying that they want to come home, and even beg to come home, but the family wants them to stay in treatment.  And while it can be tough hearing that your loved one is upset, it is also for the greatest good if they remain in treatment.  It helps the addict and the family in the long run.

There are many things that a family can do to ensure that their loved one remains in treatment.  And while it can be difficult at times, family members can be one of the biggest providers of support and encouragement for an addict, which is why they must remain steadfast in keeping the person in treatment.  They are the addict’s cheerleaders so to speak, but they are also the ones who must work to encourage them to do what is best.  Methods to help ensure that a loved one stays in treatment include:

  • Encouragement – Encouraging the addict to remain in treatment and pursue the treatment program can be one of the most effective ways to help them remain in treatment.  The immediate hardships they are experiencing can seem overwhelming, but encouragement can help the person to remain convicted to overcoming these troubles.
  • Don’t “Save Them” – What is meant by this is if a loved one in treatment calls and says it is too hard and needs to come home, and asks you to come get them or pay for them to come home, do not do it. While it may upset them for the time being, allowing them to remain in the facility and continue to go through the program is what is going to let them overcome these hardships.  Rescuing them only pulls them out of treatment prematurely and can potentially end up in them relapsing later on.
  • Maintain a Positive Attitude – The reality is that when a person in treatment is trying to leave and is turned down, they can potentially have quite an explosion of emotions. They may get angry, sad, and in other ways upset, but you must maintain a positive mindset and get across the truth that things will get better.  Retaliating to their emotion may only make things worse.
