How Music Therapy Can Benefit the Addiction Recovery Process

There are a variety of methods that can assist those who are working to recover from their addiction.  Various therapies and methodologies have been employed in addiction treatment to help addicts to address their deep-seated emotional and mental factors.  One type of treatment that has been used much more frequently is music therapy treatment.

The Benefits of Music Therapy Treatment

Music therapy treatment can have a wide variety of different benefits.  One aspect of music that can have significant benefit is the lyrics.  There can be many different thoughts and emotions that are experienced in the course of addiction and recovery, and it can be difficult for a person to find the right words to be able to express these things.  There can also be experiences and feelings that may be hard to remember because of having been difficult or painful.  Listening to music and lyrics can help a person to recall and revisit these things more efficiently, which can assist them to be able to communicate them.  Lyrics can remind a person of certain events and send them right back into those dusty corners of their mind, which can assist them to work through these difficulties.  Song lyrics that harmonize with what the individual is going through help them to be able to vocalize about that situation and get some therapeutic relief from it.  And they don’t have to be stuck in remembering these times either because once the song is over, they can be pulled out of these difficulties.

Music in itself can have a wide variety of benefits to an individual.  It has shown to make a person happier, lowers stress, improves health, assists sleep, improves and strengthens memory and learning processes.  There are a multitude of other benefits to it as well, so the application within addiction treatment makes perfect sense.  The ability of music to improve memory is, of course, applicable to the lyric type of therapy as mentioned above.  The reality is that rooting through all of the intricacies of addiction can be quite an arduous process, and whatever can assist an individual to do so can be quite beneficial.

Other applications of music therapy treatment can be within the realm of learning and practicing playing an instrument.  It can help the person to learn a new hobby that can be used to fill the time previously occupied by substances.  Boredom or lack of activity can potentially lead to relapse, and so learning new activities and hobbies to fill time can help the person to remain sober.  It also provides an outlet for them to release pent up feelings or emotions.  Instead of using drugs or alcohol when they feel stressed or upset, they can play or write a song to help release and express these complicated feelings and emotions.
