Free Addiction Treatment: Do You Qualify and Should You Trust the Program

Those who are homeless, in poverty, or low income families can have an extremely difficult time when it comes to addiction affecting them.  The extant difficulties of finances coupled with substance abuse can compound their struggles tenfold.  For some in this situation, treatment does not even seem like an option.  The reality is that there are a few different options for the individuals that are struggling with financial difficulties.

State Funded Addiction Treatment

Each state generally offers its own free treatment resources.  There can be varying requirements, or qualifications between states that can determine which individuals are able to attend these treatment centers.  Some states are going to have centers that have priorities that they will accept into treatment prior to receiving any other individuals.  This is generally limited to those at more critical risk, such as pregnant women, or IV users.  Generally, most states require proof of inability to pay, as well as lack of insurance to be accepted into free treatment.

There are also religious organizations that will often times offer their own types of addiction treatment services, some of which are free.  These could include organizations such as Salvation Army and Harbor Light.  Many of these are kept running through fundraising or other efforts to produce funds for them.  These can have their own set of requirements or qualifications necessary to be admitted into the program.  This could include factors such as age group, or whether the person is a member of the religious group associated with the treatment center.  Not all faith based treatment centers are free of charge so verify this before admitting yourself or a loved one into one of these treatment centers.

Free treatment centers can vary widely in what kind of services they offer.  Some will offer full residential treatment programs, while others may only offer outpatient, or medication assisted treatment.  Some free treatment centers will not offer detox as part of their program, which can be vital for addicts of certain drugs.  When reviewing free treatment centers, it is important to look over what exactly they offer before going into the program.  Being that addicts abusing certain drugs, or heavier users may need more intensive treatment, types such as outpatient may not cut it for them.

The Reliability of Free Treatment

Many wonder upon the quality of these free treatment programs.  While the reality is that any treatment is obviously better than no treatment, free centers can tend to be lacking in comparison to other types of treatment centers.  While a person with no other options is absolutely better seeking these than no treatment at all, other treatment facilities should be looked into as well.  Centers that take insurance or offer some type of financing many times offer much better success rates, as well as better facilities.  Since most free treatment centers are going to offer less comprehensive programs, and sometimes only one type of treatment, they tend to have less success.  Whereas, other certain facilities can offer full programs with multiple types of treatment to fully address an individual’s addiction.
