Pregnant Addicts

Can Pregnant Addicts Be Prioritized to Receive Addiction Treatment?

Addiction is a condition which can affect those of all demographics. There are addicts of all ages, races, religions, and professions struggling all around the nation.  While this may be true, there are particular groups that professionals tend to focus on helping, such as younger children or pregnant addicts.

The fact that pregnant addicts are not only struggling with their own addiction but also affecting the health and life of a child brings up the question of whether they should be prioritized to receive treatment. The reality is that there is a massive amount of struggling addicts out there who want and need help, and yet run into barriers with getting treatment due to lack of resources, or other reasons. In this type of situation, they seek state or federally funded treatment centers, which can have mile long waiting lists. In certain states or areas, these kinds of free or low-cost centers often will prioritize pregnant addicts for receiving treatment.  Some centers will even prioritize certain higher risk groups such as pregnant women using IV drugs, pregnant women with general addictions, women with addictions within a year after giving birth, and other IV addicts.

Why Are Pregnant Addicts Prioritized

The reasoning behind this kind of prioritization can be understood since there is a large threat to the life of the child.  But there is also this factor of individuals who have been on waiting lists for weeks or months, desperately trying to get help, just to have an open spot taken by a pregnant addict.  The general urgency for treating pregnant women is to save the child or at least lessen the damage, but these other individuals also need treatment desperately.  It is a tough call for these types of centers to make, as they only have a certain amount of beds available, so they sometimes have to prioritize.  A pregnant addict treated can be looked at as saving two lives, but this is not to discount the need of other addicts.

An unfortunate circumstance that pregnant addicts often run into is the stigma and criticism of their addiction.  A pregnant woman struggling with addiction is often condemned and reproved for being an addict and hurting their child.  While it is a very despairing condition to witness, the reality is that these women need help just like any other addict.  They need to receive treatment to handle their addiction, as being derogated does nothing to help them or their unborn child.  This stigma has been a longstanding difficulty when it comes to pregnant addicts receiving treatment.
