Poorly Planned Interventions can Damage Addicts and Their Families

Poorly Planned Interventions: How They Can Damage Addicts and Their Families

There are millions all over the nation that continue to struggle with addictions to various types of substances. Addiction can completely consume an individual, and it can reach a point where their sole motivation in life becomes using their substance of choice. In these situations, it often requires comprehensive treatment for an individual to overcome their addiction. Many of those struggling recognize this and seek the help they need, but what about the others who have not reached the point of wanting help or are completely resistant to it? This is where a properly planned and held intervention can often be of great benefit. Although, there are many different details of an intervention that must be upheld, as well as some things that must be avoided. Poorly planned interventions that are rushed into without proper planning can end up resulting in more detriment than benefit.

Poorly Planned Interventions

When it comes to poorly planned interventions, there are quite a few things that can go wrong. Since an intervention can be a tense and precarious situation for the addict, any one thing going wrong could potentially turn it into a disaster. This could include various mistakes, such as:

 Placing Blame

 Ambushing with Questions or Accusations

 Lack of Proper Discussion Direction

 Not Following Through

Family can be one of the biggest values or one of the biggest hindrances during an intervention. The topic of a loved one’s addiction can bring about tempers and frustration, which can, in turn, lead to lashing out or harsh words. Family members must be indoctrinated upon proper drug addiction intervention behavior and discussions before going into the actual event. This can help to mitigate the occurrence of angry words or arguments. There’s also the potential that the addict could try and reverse the intervention by placing blame on their loved ones. If the family members buy into this, it can lead to improper discussion direction or be fighting among the family when they are supposed to appear unified. This can once again be mitigated through intervention preparation.

Following Through with Drug Addiction Intervention

Following through is one of the most integral steps in an intervention. Once the intervention has run its course and the addict has agreed to seek treatment, this must be followed through immediately. The addict must then be on their way to treatment shortly after, if not immediately. Otherwise, the subject may be forgotten about, or the addict may buy enough time that they can continue using. Ideally, a treatment center has already been chosen and lined up before the drug addiction intervention even takes place. This way, the person can head there quickly after agreeing to receive help and before they can change their mind.

Seek Professional Assistance to Avoid Poorly Planned Interventions

Realistically, the best way to stage a drug addiction intervention is with professional assistance. There are many intervention specialists out there that can help to ensure that the event is properly prepared, formatted, and staged. They’re familiar with the various details that need to be in place, as well as any potential hiccups and how to mitigate them. Trying to stage an intervention without proper knowledge and preparation can end in disaster, so it’s better to enlist a professional that can ensure it goes down smoothly. It’s important to remember that intervention is not a guaranteed method of getting through to the addict, but a professionally done intervention generally has better results. Sometimes, there may be only one chance to get it right, as an addict may be untrusting of the family after they attempt one, so you might as well have a professional do it right the first time.
