There are many different ways to begin to cope with anger post rehab effectively.  The result, of course, being able to address these feelings without the use of substances.  These ways include:

  • Communication – Learn to express your anger through proper communication effectively. Effectively means without being extremely defensive or assertive, or “flying off the handle” as the old saying goes.  DThis can be tough to adjust to, but it can be very productive.
  • Physical Release – Using physical means can be a very effective way to release anger. You can go for a run, go to the gym, or punch a punching bag or pillow.
  • Take a Step Back – If a fight or argument is becoming very heated, and you find yourself extremely angry, walk away for a little while. Stepping away for a bit allows you to cool off and then more calmly and rationally approach the situation.
  • Creative Approaches – Using innovative methods to release anger can be very beneficial. Whether it be painting, writing, journaling, or music, these can all be effective ways to express anger post rehab through an alternative medium.
  • Avoid Negativity – While there can always be negativity in life, the situations or people you know that negatively affect you regularly should be prevented. Toxic people and situations can be detrimental to your sobriety and potentially lead to relapse.  So if they can be avoided, then it would be best just to stay away.
  • Breathing Exercises – A long used technique for anger has been breathing exercises. Simply, take some deep breaths to calm yourself down.  And while doing so, see if you can begin to understand the other person’s point of view. Understanding does not necessarily mean you have to force yourself to agree, but see if you can find a part of their viewpoint that you do understand.

As stated previously, learning to cope with anger post rehab is extremely vital to sobriety.
