Why Do Teens Think It is Cool To Do Drugs?
Teens and Drugs

You have probably heard the saying that middle school or high school never ends, and this is often true. It can certainly be true when it comes to drugs and drug abuse among teens and adults. Many of the reasons why teens choose to do drugs are similar to the reasons why adults do drugs. But teenagers are in a unique situation. Most of them are dependent on their parents or caregivers. They don’t have much freedom and independence, and they are not old enough and wise enough to know the possible effects and inevitable outcomes of all that they do.

When adults try to help teenagers who may be using and abusing drugs, they may have good intentions, but they often choose to use a hard hand first. They approach the situation as guardians of the teens, and they only act with hardness and punishment. In some cases this might work, but it is rare that it lasts. In addition, it often creates rifts between teens and their parents, teachers or other adults. A better way to help a teenager who is struggling with drug addiction may be to approach the situation with understanding. Learning and looking closely at why teens do drugs and why they think drugs are cool in the first place may be a good place to start.

Why Do Teens Think Drugs Are Cool?

Teens see their favorite celebrities doing drugs and drinking to excess. Magazines and entertainment shows are full of celebrity icons who are seen doing drugs. In addition, television shows and movies joke about drugs as if they are not serious or life-threatening.

Their parents, siblings or other relatives do drugs. Many children grow up in households where drugs are being used, and they simply become accustomed to that lifestyle.

Peers they look up to are doing drugs at school. Peer pressure has a stronger hold on teens than you might think. When popular kids in school or those who other teens look up to are doing drugs, it becomes an enticing practice.

Other reasons why teens think drugs are cool:

  •  They’re looking for an escape or they want to relax.
  •  Boredom could be a factor.
  •  They feel the need to rebel.
  •  They want to experiment.

What To Do If You Know A Teen Who Is Addicted To Drugs

If you have a child or student who is using and abusing drugs, you need to take action as an adult. The best way to get them help is to go straight to an inpatient rehab facility. Inpatient rehab facilities have many benefits. Unlike outpatient rehab centers, inpatient rehab centers keep their patients day and night. Addicts are taken away from temptations that may have caused them to relapse in the past, and they’re able to speak with therapists and counselors for comprehensive cognitive behavioral therapy. All of this can stop addiction and give teens back their lives.

Not trying to put the blame on celebrities but I wish they would realize the responsibility that comes with their public person status. I also wish the media were not cheering for some of them that set a bad example and expose more of the sane ones.

The main reason that teen males might do drugs is not because they think it is cool but rather it is because they are attempting to get a girlfriend when the friendliest girls will tend to take drugs

The media gives such a wrong impression to kids and teens and even adults. Frankly it just does not work that way! I mean you look at these celebrities that are idolized for being irresponsible and living crazy life styles and their lives are truly in shambles. I remember the VH1 specials about bands that had made it famous then drugs and alcohol and their fame and band are completely wrecked. I have never heard any one of those people state that drugs and alcohol were the best thing that they had done. Instead they are either still trying to get clean or regret living that life style. I just wish that these people with such influence could put their powers towards good instead of evil.

In regards to teens, I believe the right education on drugs and giving children responsibilities are steps toward overcoming the teens need for drugs. Ultimately it is up to the individual, but I believe the above gives them a fighting chance.

It’s sad that they are under this kind of pressure and it’s a difficult age. Plus, parents don’t know where to turn to if they suspect something is off with their kids.

I agree with a lot of the things that this article states. I remember when it was that you wanted to do something to feel like the typical “bad boy” persona for me. It was something that made me have an edge over the other kids at my school who didn’t use drugs, and there was always that allure. In looking back on it, even though I had the family structure to pull me out of it I did indeed get into the drug scene due to peer pressure, and that was something that some of the other older kids I looked up to did. Of course with my hindsight being 20/20, I can see that really I just looked really stupid and regret doing that, but that would not be cool to just dwell on the past. The best thing to do is to step in when you know a younger person is getting into that, and realize that your opinion does matter, and what you say to them will likely alter the way they view those “role models” that do the drugs. They do not realize that the celebrities or public figures that they look up to are also seeking an escape or have something in their environment that they cannot handle or face up to. I have been the person who stepped in and helped some young kids get off drugs, and I can tell you that when you really get through the social crap and show them that this will ruin their life, there is no better feeling in the world.

The beginning of this article makes a very good point and I couldn’t agree more. Teenagers are often rebellious in their actions and will do things to act out against their parents in order to be cool and stick out as an individual. The way to get them to be a better child which in turn will make them be a better adult when they grow up is to simply guide them into making the right decisions. Children are often disregarded as to how smart they are but you will be surprised how often they will make the right decision if given the right information. As I have stated in previous reviews, giving them information is a form of positive control and letting them make up their minds and decisions is one of the best methods of controlling a person.

Opinion leaders do play an important part in young people’s lives as they look up to them and want to be just like them as experience has taught them, you do as the successful people do. So if their role model was a famous rapper and/or millionaire as well as a drug addict, they will think that they have to be a drug addict in order to be successful. The thought process of “Well if it worked for them, then it will work for me” enters in.

It is important to get your kids to rehab and get help as soon as possible in order to get them on a better path. If the resources are not at hand at that point in time, the least you could do for the child would be to properly inform him but in a manner that is helpful, not forceful. For if it is a forceful manner they will simply rebel and not respond.

It’s complete peer pressure and media coverage from what I can see. Almost every TV show has some kind of drugs or alcohol being consumed by the actors. And it’s all portrayed as no big deal and everyone does it and you should too. Also, look at all the musicians who talk about doing drugs and how they help them to be more creative, etc. Now Marijuana is legal is several states and promoting as a drug with no dangerous effects, etc. What’s a kid to think. Obviously it must be OK. This is where the parents job becomes even tougher as you have to overcome all of this to get through to your kid that the drugs are not OK and do have bad effects. Maybe they should do with drugs and alcohol like they did with cigarettes and ban the promotion and use of them on media. It did help with cigarette usage.
