Drug Detox

What the Experts Will Tell You About Drug Detox

Detoxification is a process that involves ridding the body of drugs or alcohol. It is an important step in the process of breaking a drug or alcohol addiction. There are several things you need to know about drug detox. Below is a list of things that experts would tell you to expect during drug detox:

Drug Detox is Not an Easy Thing

Even though drug detox is necessary for breaking a drug addiction, it is anything but easy. You may experience some very unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The symptoms that you experience depend on the substance that you were using. Sweating, racing heartbeat, anxiety, tremors and insomnia are some of the most common withdrawal symptoms. Some people may also experience hallucinations while they are going through withdrawal.

The reason drug detox is so unpleasant is because your body is still craving the drug. Your body is also getting rid of the harmful substances that you took in during the last time that you used the drug. The type of substance that you were using is one of the factors that affects how long the symptoms will last. Keep in mind that people who have a medical condition may notice that their symptoms are worse.

Detox Time Can Vary

Because everybody is different, the drug detox time can vary. Some people are able to get through drug detox in just two or three days. The drug and the amount of time that one was using are two of the factors that affect how long drug detox lasts. Some addicts are suffering from addictions to multiple substances, and these individuals will need more time to recover.

Drug Detox Increases Your Tolerance

The purpose of drug detox is to get you off the drug and prepare you for rehab. However, some people will return to the drug after they go through drug detox. If you happen to use the drug again after detox, then your tolerance to it will likely increase. You will also develop a greater dependence on the drug.

Multiple Attempts May Be Required

The first drug detox may be unsuccessful. This process is not easy, which is why some people do not succeed the first time around. If you have a sincere commitment to get well, then you can attempt drug detox again.

Why People Need Inpatient Rehab

It is important to note that drug detox is just one step in recovery. If one wants to get rid of an addiction, then it is necessary to enroll in inpatient rehab. These facilities provide a safe, drug-free environment that allows patients to relax and focus on healing. The professionals help patients recognize the issues that caused their addiction and teach them how to avoid triggers and commit to a sober lifestyle. Without detox, the rehabilitation portion of treatment could not be possible.

Drug detoxing sounds like a difficult task, but at the end of it all, you will have a clean system. You will be able to give your body the nutrients it needs to function at it’s best ability. It is so wonderful to know that there are facilities that focus on detoxing, rather than giving you a pill to help you recover from addiction.

Very useful info, now I understand that it clearly needs to be done as an inpatient treatment. Not only it is dangerous but sounds impossible without the professional help and the help of the support of others that are going through the same

I agree that drug detox can be difficult as moth things that change your life are. I myself went through a detox program after spending 6 months in a hospital and being on drugs after that for about a year. I had a full blown trip while on the detox program.
But I can attest that the energy and vitality after doing a detoxification program was very well worth all of the things that went on through out the process.
This article did give me some insight and food for thought on why multiple attempts may have to be tried.
I also couldn’t agree more to the fact that in patient rehab should be done, that way the person has a safe environemnt to recover in and not being constantly pestered by outside influences to slip up and go back to drugs.

Getting a person through drug detox is a very hard thing to do. Leaving it up to the people who do this and are trained in the various techniques it requires to get the person through is best way you help the individual. They are already suffering from the effects of the substance they are addicted to and going through the cravings that come along with this so trying to do it on their own leaves the person felling like it can’t be done. They need to be somewhere where they can get the help they need.
