The Dangers of Labeling Yourself in Addiction Rehab

There can be a multitude of different labels when it comes to addiction and recovery.  Individuals always end up being labeled as something during the course of addiction or treatment, whether it be addict, alcoholic, drug addict, druggie, etc.

The trouble with addiction as a condition is that there is often a flood of labels placed on a person.  For instance, the typical beginning of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is the person announcing their name and that they are an addict.

The large trouble with labels like these is that they can immediately stigmatize addiction and bring about preconceptions in the eyes of the person, friends and family, and the overall society.  It can begin to cause the person to have preconceptions about themselves, or bring feelings of self-loathing or shame into the equation, which is no good for an individual in recovery.  These can, in fact, be relapse triggers if they are not properly addressed or handled.

Recovery Without Labels

When looking at these different points, it raises the question of whether a person can begin their journey of recovery without being labeled and without stigmatization.  The short answer is yes.  There are many different types of treatments out there that circumvent labeling people as addicts.  For instance, one such treatment is SMART Recovery, which uses tools and methods for coping and self-expression, while avoiding traditional labels.  It helps a person to develop coping skills and obtain tools to handle negative self-evaluation or talk, which allows the individual to have ways to handle these things without falling effect to them.

The bottom line is that these types of labels can have very negative connotations when it comes to addiction.  A person who is struggling with addiction is simply that – a person.  They are dealing with a condition which they need help for.  The introduction of labels and the connotations, stigmatization, and preconceptions that go along with them is unnecessary, and in fact, complicate and worsen matters.  The person should be able to seek help and treatment without being misjudged or evaluated negatively, as they are there seeking help and that is what matters.  Overcoming the physical and mental effects of addiction can be troublesome and arduous as it is, and the difficulty of handling them can be compounded by these useless labels.  A person needs to learn self-empowerment and self-reliance, and labels are counterproductive to that, whether it be someone else labeling them, or placing those labels on themselves.

When Seeking Help for A Drug or Alcohol Addiction

Struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction can be an extremely difficult situation, but the upside is that it can be overcome.  There can be many difficult points and barriers, but through proper addiction treatment, it can be addressed and handled.  One of the most important things when it comes to addiction treatment is that it addresses each person uniquely.  Addiction is not a one size fits all condition, and it cannot be treated as such.  A person needs rehab that will address their addiction, as well as the underlying issues and factors that are unique to each person.  Here at Best Drug Rehabilitation, we do an assessment of every person that is admitted, which allows us to craft the best possible program for them.  Do not wait, give us a call today, and one of our staff can answer any questions that you may have.
