Personality Traits & Addiction

Are Certain Personality Traits Connected to Addiction Risk

There have been a multitude of efforts to discover and explain the root cause behind addiction.  Researchers have attempted to find a common underlying factor that would help to discover, prevent and handle addiction.  One attempt at this was the labeling of addictive personalities.  And while this concept does have some degree of workability, it has also been quite a controversial term.  It has been considered to be too broad and general of a term, and that it tends to convolute the subject rather than explains it.

There has been a shift over into looking at individual personality traits.  There have been several different personality traits which have been found to be common in many of those struggling with addiction.  These traits spread across the whole of addiction, rather than just to drugs or alcohol addiction.

These traits were found and confirmed to have existed through different studies.  Knowing of these different personality traits of addiction allows professionals to have predictive capabilities in regard to addiction.  While they can be beneficial in the prevention of addiction, they can also make recovery more complicated and difficult.

The traits found were:

  • Frustrated Easily
  • Impulsive – Acting without thinking
  • Increased Stress Response
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Lack of Self-confidence
  • Does not like delayed gratification
  • Difference – Feels different, socially isolated or alienated
  • Enjoys nonconformity and dislikes conformity
  • Perceives disrespect or insult sensitively

The Roles These Personality Traits Can Play In Recovery

These traits are not encompassing of all addicts, meaning not every addict is going to have these traits.  Rather, they have been observed commonly enough within many addicts to show that there is a connection.  As stated previously, they have predictive value for professionals to be able to catch addiction early on.  But, these traits can also cause a person to behave self-destructively and it is important to be able to recognize them in oneself, especially in recovery.  A person in recovery needs to be able to stay aware of these things in themselves so that they can better handle them.  While they can make recovery more difficult if let reign, they also do not have to control your life.  Being aware of them within yourself allows you to create strategies and plans to be able to circumvent their potentially detrimental effects.  Conversely, if these traits are allowed to influence a recovering individual’s life, relapse can come about quite quickly.  Hence, why it is so critical to properly manage these traits, or enlist the help of a counselor or therapist to assist in a plan for managing them.
