Addiction Treatment: Not Rhetoric, Why Resources Are Needed
Addiction has been a constant issue within our society for decades. More and more individuals fall into the deadly grasps of substance abuse every single day. As a result of the problem that addiction has continued to pose, there have been many different attempts to try and help these individuals and reduce the numbers of victims. The people continuously look to and wait on the authorities of government and health to discover or implement a more successful way to address this subject. But unfortunately, much of what is being heard by the public is continuous rhetoric, while there is an absence of real solutions or assistance. While addiction treatment is a solution, it does not eliminate the numbers of individuals becoming addicted to some substance every day.
Everyone has heard the adage “actions speak louder than words,” and this applies to this current situation. And yet, the same research, studies, and speeches continue to be given over and over. There comes the point where speeches about further addiction studies no longer have the breadth that it once did. Many studies and research are only looking into the same aspects that already have been reviewed, and they end up releasing the same or similar results, which just becomes a waste of time and money.
Why Rhetoric is Not Helping
The reality is that there is already much known about addiction, so repetition of the same studies does not provide any forward momentum. We understand many of the causes, functions, and intricacies of addiction, and so doing this further research is not uncovering anything new or useful. Now is a time for action aimed at assisting struggling individuals to finally be able to overcome their substance abuse through addiction treatment. People who are in the midst of struggling with addictions to drugs and alcohol need treatment to be able to overcome it and the provision of already known information does nothing for the issue.
Various parts of the government have touched upon the subject over the years, and yet all of the duplicate research, fancy speeches, etc. have not helped to reduce the numbers of addiction. Take the Trump Administration for example, who has not necessarily laid out a detailed plan of how they are going to address the opioid epidemic. Their discussion and handling of the situation have rested in their plan to create the Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. They state that the commission is going to be creating a report and searching for methods of federal funding. And yet, once again, this is simply rhetoric and duplicate work, without directly addressing the issue.
Resources are what is needed for these individuals to be able to overcome addiction treatment. They need to have better access to treatment through further funding for state drug rehab facilities, as well as the expansion of these centers because they continue to be overcrowded. There also needs to be further implementation of Naloxone to be able to save lives from an overdose. And there needs to be a shift of viewpoint and operating basis into getting these individuals directly into treatment, rather than punishment or imprisonment, as these often do nothing to help people overcome addiction. Finally, for those who see their loved ones struggling, there needs to be assistance and education provided as far as how to get someone into rehab.
